The history of Waiata Shores: “from pre-Treaty to today…….”

Before 1840, Waiata Shores was part of Te Ākitai Waiohua’s rohe, and the iwi still hold mana whenua status here today. In 1842, Ihaka Takaanini and others sold the Papakura Block, which covered around 6,500 hectares from the airport to Papakura.

The buyer was Crown agent George Clarke and the price £400 and six horses. This marked the first land purchase in the Auckland region under the pre-emptive rights of Article Two of the Treaty of Waitangi.

About us

WSRRA is an incorporated society established on 23rd August, 2023 and registered as a charitable trust under the Charitable Trust Act, 1957.

WSRRA operates under a constitution and has ten committee members including Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. All officers are elected by members, and members have a say, fostering a democratic environment. WSRRA operates on a member-based democratic process for decision-making. The main goal of WSRRA is to foster a safe and secure environment in the neighbourhood. Hence, the idea of installing automated number plate recognition cameras in the neighbourhood.
We also organise regular events in Waiata Shores including Diwali, Christmas and Matariki (tbc), Waiata Time Trials (in summer). This is a great way of residents getting to know each other and forging life long friendships.

Community initiatives: building a stronger, united Waiata Shores together

“Tāu mai, tāu atu – kia whakahīhī te Waiata Shores!”
“Come together, let’s make Waiata Shores shine with pride!”

At Waiata Shores, our community initiatives are all about fostering connection, support, and growth. Led by the dedicated efforts of our committee, these initiatives focus on enhancing the quality of life for all residents. Whether it’s organising events, supporting local projects, community surveillance, security and patrolling or driving sustainability efforts, our committee plays a key role in creating a vibrant, engaged, and caring community. Together, we strive to build a neighbourhood where everyone feels valued, safe, and proud to be a resident.

Community Surveillance Camera Project

The Community Surveillance Camera Project is an initiative aimed at enhancing safety and security within the neighbourhood. By installing strategically placed cameras, we aim to deter crime, assist in incident resolution, and provide peace of mind for the residents of Waiata Shores and Conifer Grove. This project encourages a collective effort in keeping our community safe, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and responsibility among all who live here. Through ongoing collaboration and support, we strive to create an environment where everyone feels secure and valued.

Community Watch and Patrolling

The Community Watch and Patrolling programme is a vital initiative designed to increase neighbourhood safety through proactive engagement. Residents volunteer to patrol key entrances to Waiata Shores, keeping an eye out for suspicious activity and supporting one another in maintaining a secure environment. By working together and staying vigilant, we foster a sense of community, encourage responsible behaviour, and ensure a safer, more connected place to live. This programme empowers residents to take an active role in the well-being of their neighbourhood.

Events & Celebrations

Community events and celebrations in Waiata Shores are an important part of what makes our neighbourhood special. These gatherings provide an opportunity for residents to connect, share experiences, and celebrate our diverse cultures and traditions. From local festivals and holiday parties to outdoor movie nights and charity fundraisers, there’s always something to bring us together. These events help strengthen the bonds between neighbours, foster a sense of pride, and create lasting memories for everyone in the community.

WSRRA Services

The Waiata Shores Residents and Ratepayers Association (WSRRA) is dedicated to providing a range of services that enhance the well-being and safety of our community. We focus on creating a supportive and vibrant neighbourhood by offering initiatives such as:

Community Events & Celebrations

WSRRA organises and encourages regular events to bring residents together, fostering a sense of unity and pride. From social gatherings to seasonal celebrations, these events are a great way to connect with neighbours.

Safety & Security Initiatives

We support projects like community watch programmes and surveillance camera systems to ensure the safety of our residents. These initiatives aim to create a safer, more secure environment for families to thrive. We work closely with our Conifer Grove neighbours on this.

Advocacy & Support

The WSRRA acts as a voice for the community, representing the interests of Waiata Shores residents in dealings with local and regional authorities and organisations. We work to ensure our neighbourhood’s needs are met and concerns are addressed.

Environmental & Sustainability Projects

We’re committed to preserving the beauty of Waiata Shores by supporting sustainable practices and environmental initiatives like community clean-ups that improve the local area for future generations. Also, we contribute to the beautification of our area, the welfare of trees, parks and reserves, and the care of the Waiata shoreline and the lower reaches of the Papakura Stream.

Community Support and Resources

The WSRRA is committed to fostering a sense of community by providing essential resources and support to residents. Our services include organising local assistance programmes, such as neighbourhood help groups, to support those in need. Whether it’s coordinating volunteer efforts, providing information on local services, or offering guidance on community-related issues, we aim to make Waiata Shores a caring and collaborative place where everyone feels supported.

Communication & Information Sharing

The WSRRA prioritizes keeping residents well-informed and engaged. We offer regular updates through “Waiata Neighbours WhatsApp Group”, and Annual General Meeting (AGM)”, ensuring that everyone stays connected and up-to-date with what is happening in Waiata Shores. Whether it’s about upcoming events, local news, or important developments, our communication channels ensure that all residents are in the loop and have a voice in shaping the future of our neighbourhood.
